How to add a store locator to Shopify: page, popup or section

A store locator lets customers find your shops, dealers or pickup points from your Shopify store. This guide covers where it can sit, what location data to prepare, how dealer filters and location pages work, which map to use, and what to watch after launch, with the steps in One Stop Store Locator & Maps.

We make One Stop Store Locator & Maps. This guide describes store locator setups in general and how our app does each step.

Where the store locator sits

Three placements for a store locator on a Shopify store.
PlacementBest forTheme work
Store locator pageA page in the main menu, such as Find a storeNone: the app creates the page on install
Popup buttonA floating button on every page that opens the locatorTurn on the app embed
Section on a pageThe locator inside an existing page, such as ContactAdd the block in the theme editor (Online Store 2.0)

Prepare your location data

Each location needs a name, an address and a city. Add the country, state, postal code, hours, phone, email, website and tags where you have them. Coordinates are optional; an address is enough.

For more than a handful of locations, use a spreadsheet. One Stop Store Locator & Maps imports a CSV file in any country, previews every row before anything is saved, and can update existing locations by name. Export gives you the full list back to edit.

Dealers, stockists and filters

Brands that sell through other stores often call it a dealer or stockist locator, or a where to buy page. Tags on each location, such as the product lines it carries, become filters customers can combine. Retailers that only sell online can be listed with a link to their website.

Location pages

A locator answers “where is the nearest store”. A page per location answers “what are the hours of the store on Main Street”, which is what people search for. One Stop Store Locator & Maps can publish a page for every location with its address, hours, contacts, photo, map and nearby locations. Shopify lists the pages in your sitemap, and each carries LocalBusiness structured data.

The map: no key, or your own

Showing a Google map yourself takes a Google Maps Platform API key with billing set up. One Stop Store Locator & Maps needs no key: its map has five styles of its own. If you already pay for Mapbox or Google Maps, you can add your own key for their styles and place suggestions.

After launch: where customers search

Searches show demand you cannot see in sales: the towns customers looked in, and how often they found no store nearby. Searches & gaps lists those areas, Coverage gaps maps the ones with no store within about 25 miles (40 km), and for US areas Area profile shows US Census demographics. Customers with no store nearby can leave their email.

Questions

How do I add a store locator page to Shopify?

Install a store locator app. One Stop Store Locator & Maps creates a Store Locator page under Online Store, then Pages, on install, usually at /pages/store-locator. Add your locations and put the page in your menu.

Do I need a Google Maps API key?

Not with One Stop Store Locator & Maps. Its map and search work without a key. A Google or Mapbox key is optional.

Can I import store locations from Excel?

Yes. Save the sheet as CSV and upload it. The preview flags rows with problems, such as an unknown country, before anything is saved.

Does a store locator help local SEO?

The locator page itself is one page. Location pages give each store its own page with address and hours, listed in the Shopify sitemap with LocalBusiness structured data, which is what local searches look for.
