Volume discounts, tiered pricing, mix and match or bundles: which Shopify offer fits

Volume discounts, quantity breaks, tiered pricing, mix and match and bundles all reward a larger order, and the names are often used for one another. They differ in what counts toward the discount and in what the customer sees. This guide sets them side by side, with a worked example for each and the setting in One Stop Volume Discounts that builds it.

We make One Stop Volume Discounts. This guide explains each offer type in general terms and links to the page that shows how our app sets it up.

Volume discounts and quantity breaks

A volume discount is the saving for buying more. Quantity breaks are the points where the price steps down, and on the product page they usually appear as tiers the customer can pick: 1, 2 or 4 items, with the saving next to each.

Use them when customers buy the same item repeatedly or in multiples: consumables, apparel basics, gifts for a team. The question to settle is scope. A deal can cover one variant, a product, a collection or the whole store.

Shopify’s own automatic discounts apply at checkout but show nothing on the product page, which is where the customer decides how many to buy. A product-page widget closes that gap.

Tiered pricing: all units or each range

Tiered pricing shows a price for each quantity range. There are two ways to read a tier. With all-units pricing, the tier reached sets the price of every item: 30 items at the 12-item price. With graduated pricing, only the items inside each range get that range’s price.

One Stop Volume Discounts uses all-units pricing, which is easier for customers to check. A price table with a savings column makes the steps easy to compare, and stores whose prices differ per product can keep the tiers in a product metafield.

Bulk discounts and pack pricing

When the offer is a pack, such as 3, 6 or 12 shirts for a fixed saving, decide what happens between pack sizes. Highest tier reached applies the largest pack once: 9 shirts get the 6-pack saving. Complete packs discount every full pack: 9 shirts are a 6 pack plus a 3 pack, and leftover items stay at full price.

Mix and match versus bundles

Mix and match is a counting rule: different products or variants add up toward the same tier, so 1 of A plus 1 of B is 2 items. It suits ranges where customers want variety, such as flavors, colors or scents.

A bundle builder is the display for that rule. Customers pick the items on the product page and a progress bar shows how many are missing. A bundle page puts the whole range on one landing page, and a cart progress card lets customers shop with the theme’s own buttons while a floating card counts what is already in the cart.

If the pack must be exact, such as a box of 6, require the exact quantity before Add to cart.

Free gifts and spend goals

A free gift can be tied to a quantity tier, added to the cart with the tier, or to a cart amount, unlocked when the cart passes a spend goal. Quantity gifts push more of one product; spend goals push the whole cart. A progress message showing what is still missing matters for both.

Do you need Shopify Plus?

Questions

What is the difference between volume discounts and tiered pricing?

A volume discount is the saving for buying more. Tiered pricing is how that saving is shown and applied: a price for each quantity range. In One Stop Volume Discounts, the tier reached sets the price of every item in the deal.

What is a mix and match discount?

A discount where different products or variants count together toward the same tier. 1 of product A plus 1 of product B counts as 2 items.

Is a bundle the same as a volume discount?

Not quite. A volume discount usually counts more of the same item. A bundle combines different items, and its discount comes from the tier the combined count reaches.

Which offer raises average order value the most?

It depends on the catalog. Repeat-purchase items suit quantity breaks, ranges with variety suit mix and match, and stores with a wide catalog often add a spend goal. Each deal in One Stop Volume Discounts reports its added revenue and average order value, so you can compare.
